Welcome to Binaural Beats Master!

Binaural beats are one of the most popular tools used for personal and spiritual development, they help us to reach altered states of consciousness, by changing our brainwaves to enable us to have different types of experiences.

I love using binaural beats, but in the beginning found information about them very confusing, then trying to find good sites that had great products was an even bigger task.

The History Of Binaural Beats

Binaural beats were first discovered in 1839 by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove but remained a scientific mystery until many years later. In 1973 an article called “Audititory Beats in the Brain” was released by Gerald Oster which offered new findings, this led to new research into them for cognitive and neurological behaviour.

Robert Monroe was known for his work on human consciousness and along with physicist Thomas Warren Campbell and electrical engineer Dennis Mennerich researched the effects of binaural beats on consciousness, one of the effects that Monroe had, was what he called "outer body experiences" (OBEs). The results from all this research created the binaural beats technology.

With this technology Monroe formed a self-development industry and set up the Monroe Institute,  which is a non-profit organisation for the research and education of human consciousness.

What Are Binaural Beats?

binaural beats and isochronic tones sound waves going into the ear
Binaural Beats are digitally created sounds that activate certain areas of the brain to create different effects. Our brains work by using different pulses and frequencies for everything that we do throughout the day and night.

Binaural beats are a unique series of pulses and frequencies that, when used with headphones or earphones work directly with your brain, telling it which frequency to experience.
An example of which brainwave to create, you can think of it as either tuning into a station on a radio, or tuning the channels on a new television, you alter the frequency to get the radio station or television channel that you want to listen to or watch.

So to create the different mind states for experiences such as meditation, lucid dreaming etc, you have to use the correct binaural beat that operates at the right frequency of brainwave, for the brain to create that particular state of mind.

How Do Binaural Beats Work?

Binaural relates to two, so there are two different tones in binaural beats, one tone is played into one ear while the other tone is played into the other ear and they merge together, the difference in the tones between the left and right creates the frequency of the binaural beat.

For example, a 5Hz binaural beat would create certain tones giving a frequency of 150Hz being played in the left ear, as well as creating certain tones giving a frequency of 155Hz being played in the right ear, the brain detects the difference in frequency of 5Hz and therefore initiates changes in the brainwave activity, to create the mind state associated with that frequency.
How Binaural Beats Work
Some websites refer to their binaural beats products in frequencies although most others tend to name their products for the mind state or experience that they create.
In order for them to work properly, headphones or earphones must be worn so that the tones can be heard in each ear separately, it is wise to invest in a good set to benefit fully from binaural beats, although they don't have to be expensive to be good.

So What Are Isochronic Tones And How Do They Compare To Binaural Beats?

Well basically isochronic tones and binaural beats are very much alike and are both used to create the same brainwaves, mind states and experiences, hence the reason they are quite simply mostly classed under the binaural beats banner, they just work in different ways to each other.
Isochronic tones work by producing just one tone that pulses, so they are turned on and off in a precise pattern to create the desired effect, because of this system they are reported to be more effective in comparison, which does lead to them being quicker for brainwave entrainment and unlike binaural beats, they can be used without headphones or earphones, although some people still use them to drown out external nuisance sounds. On the downside, they have been found to be a noise irritant to a minority of people.

Personally I prefer to use Isochronic tones, though I can't always tell that they are the better of the two and I always prefer to use them both with headphones or earphones so that any external noises are blocked out, allowing me to stay completely focused.
Do try isochronic tones first before buying any, just to make sure they are suitable for you and do not cause irritation, then if you can afford them and they are available for the binaural beat that you want, buy isochronic tones.

How Do I Use Binaural Beats?

Man With Headphones Laid Listening To Binaural Beats
Using Binaural Beats is extremely simple and straight forward, just find a quiet comfortable place where you won't be disturbed, put on some good headphones or earphones, then relax and listen.

If you are using Isochronic Tones, they can be listened to with speakers, although personally i still prefer to wear headphones/earphones to blank out background noises.

There are binaural beats now that are mixed with isochronic tones and again headphones or earphones should also be used when listening to these types of product.

What is Brainwave Entrainment?

Picture of brain to show brainwave entrainment
What is Brainwave entrainment? Brainwave entrainment is where you listen to a frequency, which in turn, guides your brain to that frequency and to a certain state of mind.

Also, the more that brainwave products are used, the quicker the brain achieves that particular frequency and mind state creating much better results, hence training the brain to create that brainwave i.e Brainwave entrainment.
Everybody is different, but if these products are used a few times a week over a period of a month, then your brain should be able to reach the state that you've been aiming for almost on demand and you should start to see positive changes in yourself like a decrease in stress levels, better sleep, better focus and having a better balance in life.

Any type of self improvement tool that alters the brainwaves can be used for brainwave entrainment. Examples of these are Binaural beats, and Isochronic tones.

Brainwaves And Mind States

Our brains are working every moment of our lives and at the root of all our thoughts, emotions and behaviours are tiny pulses of electrical activity that create vibrations called brainwaves, our brainwaves change according to what we are doing and feeling, when the slower brainwaves are dominant, then we can feel tired, slow, sluggish, dreamy and sleepy, when faster brainwaves are dominant then we can feel wide awake, on top of the world, wired and hyper alert. Brainwaves are divided into bandwidths to describe their function and are measured as a frequency in Hertz (Hz).
Brainwave State Frequency Chart
The brainwaves are;
Gamma - Frequency Range: Above 40Hz
Beta - Frequency Range: 14Hz - 40Hz
Alpha - Frequency Range: 7.5Hz - 14Hz
Theta - Frequency Range: 4Hz - 7.5Hz
Delta - Frequency Range: 0.5Hz - 4Hz

An example of Brainwave Activity

When we are awake and doing everyday activities we are in the beta brainwave range. When we rest, watch television and chill out, we are in the alpha brainwave range. When we daydream, rest deeply and start sleeping, we are in the theta brainwave range. When we are in a deep sleep such as in the middle of the night, we are in the delta brainwave range and when we achieve something that puts us on a natural high or when we are zoned in at a sport for example, we are in the gamma brainwave range.

Are Binaural Beats Safe?

Yes binaural beats are safe for the majority of people, they are used by millions throughout the world, they produce brainwave frequencies that our brains naturally go through on a daily basis, they are not addictive and do not have any adverse side effects, however there are certain groups that should not use them.
Are binaural beats safe - warning sign
The biggest danger of binaural beats lies with those who have medical conditions, especially those with mental and psychological disorders.

It has been highly recommended that those who are prone to seizures, should never try any type of binaural beat and that includes the lucid dreaming ones.
I think the best advice for anyone who has a medical condition, is that they should consult with their doctor/physician or healthcare provider before listening to any type of binaural beat or brainwave entrainment product.
It is also recommended that binaural beats products should never be used on children. This is mainly due to the fact that children could be epileptics and not yet know it, even those children without health issues are more prone to seizures than adults and they could quite easily bring out these issues.

Binaural Beats  products should also never be listened to while operating any type of machinery and this includes driving a vehicle, they put you into an extremely relaxed state, where you can lose focus or even enter into a state of sleep. Therefore it is always recommended that you only use them when in a quiet, safe and undisturbed environment.
